The short story entitled “Story Of An Hour” written by Kate Chopin is a story about a women who is told that her husband has dead I a train wreck. She is told this news by her sister and of course Mrs. Mallard reacts like any other wife who has just been informed of her husband’s death. Mrs. Mallard is devastated; she goes to her room to be away from everyone who has come to see her. While in her room Mrs. Mallard takes a different attitude towards her husband’s death.
Her perspective changes and you see a woman who is in some way happy that her husband has just has dead in a train wreck. She is not happy that he has died however she is happy that she is now “free, free, free!” (Chopin 1) When the short story was written in 1894, it was a time period when women really did not have much of a say so in anything and the man was the head of the house, that is just how it was back in that time period. We as the reader see Mrs. Mallard somewhat happy now that she is free to live her own life without having to be the shadow behind her husband. Everyone including Mrs. Mallard’s sister, Josephine believes that she is in her room making herself sick over the horrible news that she has been told. However we as the reader know what is going inside of Mrs. Mallard’s bedroom.
After she composes herself and comes out of her bedroom. She and Josephine make their way downstairs only to see Mr. Mallard walking through the front door with his umbrella and grip sack in hand. At that moment Mrs. Mallard falls to the ground and dies of what doctors say was a “heart disease” (Chopin 1), or was it?
